Will getting a degree help me get a better job?
Q: I lost
my job when my company had layoffs, I had worked as an accounting assistant.
I am considering going to college to get a degree since there is no work
for me now, and I would like to have a degree to be more employable. But
it's very expensive, I don't have the money for it, and also wonder if
it will be worth it. How do I know if getting a degree will result in
a better paying job? Or should I just try to get another accounting job,
even if it's part time? Help me decide!
A: That's a very
interesting and thought provoking question. You want a degree to get a
job that pays better, but is the cost worth it.
Some things you can consider
to help you make your decision:
- Your age and how many years
you intend to work. If you still have a long time to work, and you will
pursue a course of study that is interesting to you and financially
rewarding
- Will the degree actually
give you a better paying job? Check out annual salaries for the profession,
what it pays in your area
- Could you get a part time
job in accounting and attend your college part time so you would have
money to pay for the education
- If you enjoy accounting,
is this a good time for you to use your imagination and perhaps go into
business for yourself. Many economists think poor economic times are
a good opportunity to become self employed and start your business
I suggest you think about the
above and make an appointment at the guidance center at your university
to talk to a counselor about what you would like to do. These career counselors
often have many ideas for you to consider, and they can tell you what
your anticipated course work will be and what you might hope to earn when
you finish a degree program.
Having a traditional degree
does not guarantee your income will be higher. There are also vocational
programs and two year degree and certificate programs that provide training
in careers that can be very interesting for you.
Good luck, and do write again
to let me know how you are doing with your decision
